Women Who Won the War is a platform that offers women's narratives in conflict zones from a feminist perspective.

Anwar Al-Abdullah

an independent Syrian journalist specializing in women’s issues and a human rights activist with over seven years of experience in advocacy and media. She graduated from the Faculty of Media at Damascus University and holds a specialized diploma in Business Administration.
She has led and contributed to awareness and advocacy campaigns addressing gender-based violence, hate speech in Syrian media, the rights of persons with disabilities, and women’s empowerment, working closely with local civil society organizations.
A certified advocacy trainer, Anwar has delivered workshops on mobilization and media-based advocacy. She has participated in regional and international training programs, including on gender-sensitive legislation and content development, and was a member of the 2023 “Sawt” program supporting women’s political participation. In addition, she has over nine years of experience in business management and coordinating for-profit and non-profit projects.

Haneen El-Sayed

A Syrian independent journalist, Haneen Al-Sayed has covered the war in northern Syria for 14 years and worked as a field correspondent for various local and regional organizations. Her reporting has focused on the Syrian conflict and its intersections with issues such as women, displaced populations, and the environment.

Haneen was shortlisted for the True Story Award 2025 for an investigative piece on the impact of drugs on women in northern Syria.

She is a graduate of the “Women in News” program and holds a diploma in journalism from the American University of Beirut. She also studied at the Media and Journalism Technology Institute at the International University for Science and Renaissance in Aleppo.

Haneen is also a trainer with over five years of experience, specializing in digital security for journalists and digital crisis management, particularly in conflict zones.

Rasha Faek

A journalist and editor with over 15 years of experience specializing in migration, refugee issues, and education across the Middle East and North Africa. Her reporting and analysis have appeared in international outlets, including USA Today and Bloomberg BNA.
Rasha previously worked as a consultant trainer with the Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN), supporting capacity-building initiatives in fact-checking, media ethics, and accountability across the Arab region. She has authored and contributed to multiple training and editorial manuals and wrote a chapter on the transformation of education in Syria for a Bloomsbury volume on education in the Arab world. She currently serves as Knowledge and Education Editor at World Education News & Reviews (WENR), where she leads in-depth coverage of global higher education trends. Her work bridges editorial leadership, institutional development, and media capacity building, with a strong commitment to ethical and high-impact journalism.

Wafaa Khairy

  • Egypt
An independent Egyptian journalist and podcast producer, deeply committed to women's issues and storytelling from marginalised communities. Her work has been published on prominent media platforms including VICE Arabia, the International Journalists' Network (IJNet), Raseef22, and others. In 2022, she was awarded the Best Science Report by the Goethe-Institut in Cairo.
She studied digital marketing at the American University in Cairo and has leveraged her extensive professional network to help organise and cover major regional and international conferences such as Bread&Net (SMEX), the ARIJ 16th Forum, and the Cairo Media Conference hosted by AUC.
She has participated in numerous training programs and fellowships with leading media organisations, including RNW Media, the Women in News program by WAN-IFRA, and CNN. Currently, she is the Innovation and Engagement Lead at Women Who Won the War, merging her media expertise with her advocacy for women’s rights.

Mais Katt

An award-winning investigative journalist and international trainer from Syria, specializing in conflict zones. Her cross-border investigations have been published in prominent Arab and international outlets, including The Guardian, Der Spiegel, New Lines Magazine, and Daraj. She has collaborated on major investigative projects with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Lighthouse Reports.
Mais has been shortlisted for the ARIJ Award and nominated for the European Press Prize. She is also a two-time recipient of the ICFJ’s "Jim Hoge Fellowship."

Mais has trained thousands of journalists and media organizations across the region, in partnership with Internews, CFI, IMS, and DW. Her areas of expertise include media management, investigative journalism, and reporting from conflict zones, with a focus on the intersections between conflict, environment, gender, corruption, and human rights.
She is also a co-founder of Radio Rozana and the founder of Women Who Won the War
