The firs step was a training Damascus, while in In the second stage, participating journalists will develop investigative hypotheses for the project. Each reporter will receive editorial support at the hypothesis-building stage, through Women Who Won the War’s investigative clinic and one-on-one sessions with ARIJ’s Editor-in-Chief, Muneer al-Khatib. The “Syrian Nucleus” project aspires to produce 12 investigations from Syria throughout 2026.
Once the hypotheses are approved and investigations move into production, ARIJ will invite participating journalists to the annual ARIJ Forum at the end of this year — the Arab world’s largest gathering for investigative reporters, attended by hundreds of journalists as well as regional and international organizations.
Taking advantage of the presence of colleagues Rawan Damen and Hoda Osman in Damascus, the project also hosted a special dialogue session with Syrian journalists. The event, moderated by Mais Katt, featured a conversation with Damen on the future of investigative reporting in the Arab region, Syria’s opportunities in accountability journalism, and the role of investigative reporting in the country’s transitional process.
